Man Charged Over Sh16M Goods Fraud

A businessman has been charged at a Nairobi court with obtaining goods worth Sh 16 million with false pretences.

Nelson Mukara Sechere was charged that on diverse dates between July 1 and September 2024, at Kenya Veterans for Peace Nyayo House in Nairobi city within Nairobi county conspiring with others who were not in court committed the offence.

They jointly conspired to defraud Kipkoech Mutai goods to wit, 12,040 Kgs of sugar, 15,020 Kgs of rice and 5720 Kgs of cooking oil all valued at Sh 16,989,500.

He falsely pretended to be in a position to pay the said goods upon delivery which was a false fact.

He appeared before the Milimani senior principal magistrate Dolphina Alego where he denied the charges.

The defence lawyer prayed to the court for lenient bond terms citing that his client is not a flight risk,

“Your honour I pray this court to release the accused person on lenient terms since he is a Kenyan where his place of work is known and hence not a flight risk,” the lawyer pleaded to the court.

In response, the state prosecutor Sonia Njoki did not oppose his release on bond but prayed the court to give stringent terms considering the nature of the offence,

“Though we are not opposing the release of the accused person on bond, I urge this court to consider the nature of the offence and the value involved,” Njoki prayed.

She also informed the court that the accused had another similar matter before the same court which was scheduled for mention next month.

She prayed the court to consider the current matter mentioned on the same dates as the other one for consolidation.

Mukara was released on a bond of Sh 2 million with a surety of a similar amount or alternative cash bail of Sh 1 million with one contact person.

The matter will be mentioned on November 4, 2024, for consolidation.
