A young man has been convicted by a Milimani law court of stealing roasted groundnuts worth Sh 6,000.
Daniel Mukuwana pleaded guilty to the charges presented by the prosecution against him accused of stealing 15 Kg of roasted groundnuts.
According to the statement from the complainant, Mukuwana was well-known to her since he was a casual worker in the Tsunami market where the offense took place.
Judy Wanjiru Mburu who is the complainant in the matter says “I have been employing him to roast groundnuts and packaging and is a well known in Tsunami market.”
The court heard that Mukuwana broke into the shop by cutting the padlock and committed the said offense.
The prosecution told the court that on May 6, 2024, at Tsunami Market in Nairobi county, the accused broke into the shop of Wanjiru and stole the roasted groundnuts worth Sh 6,000.
The accused stole 32 pieces of roasted groundnuts which were brought before court.
In mitigation, Mukuwana expressed remorse for his actions and requested the court’s leniency.
He took responsibility for his crime and acknowledged the impact of his actions on the complainant.
Mukuwana told the Milimani senior principal magistrate Benmark Ekhumbi that he committed the offense out of desperation since his mother was sick and he had no money to go to the village to take care of her,
“Your honor my mother back in the village is sick and I wanted to go to see her but I had no money,” he said.
He told the court that he was a peasant working as a casual worker to roast groundnuts in Tsunami Market where he earns a meager salary.
The magistrate called the probation officer for a probation report before giving the sentence.
The matter was adjourned until May 16, 2024, when he will be sentenced.
