A lawyer who was charged with stealing shares worth Sh 23.6 million has been sentenced to serve six years in jail.
Robert Langat who appeared before the Milimani chief magistrate Susan Shitubi was charged with four counts which the prosecution had levelled against him.
He was charged that on diverse dates between March 8, 2017 and April 7, 2017, jointly with others who were not in court stole 1,026,700 shares valued at Sh 23,697,131 the property of Kingdom Securies Limited.
With intent to defraud Kingdom Securities Limited’s 1,026,700 shares, the court was told that Langat forged a certificate of confirmation of grant purporting it to be a genuine grant certificate issued and signed by a Milimani High Court judge Justice Aggrey Muchelule.
The offence took place at an unknown time and place but within the country.
He was further charged with forging a judicial document contrary to section 351 of the penal code.
Jointly with others who were not before the court, Langat was charged with forging a certificate of confirmation of the grant purporting it to be a genuine grant certificate issued and signed at the Milimani High Court by Justice Aggrey Muchelule.
In mitigation, he pleaded with the court for leniency citing that he is a family man and the sole breadwinner,
“Your honor I am a family man and the sole bread winner to my family and for that reason I am asking for leniency,” he pleaded.
In delivering the ruling, the Magistrate stated that the offences the accused was convicted of were very serious and could not be tolerated and the accused should be an example,
“The offences are very serious and need a custodial sentence so that the accused will be an example,” said the magistrate.
In delivering the sentence Ms Shitubi stated that the accused was convicted in all four counts that the prosecution presented against him,
“The court convicted you with the four counts that the prosecution presented against you,” read the magistrate.
He was sentenced to serve six years in prison without an alternative of a fine.
