A man personating the judge of the supreme court of Kenya, Honourable Justice William Ouko, had been arraigned in Kiambu Law Court.
The DCI officers presented Oduor Leakey Amollo before the court in a miscellaneous application seeking to detain the suspect for three more days to conclude their Investigation and charge him.
Mr. Oduor is said to be obtaining money from unsuspecting members of the public with false pretenses.
The suspect was arrested on December 8, 2023, in Migori County and presented before the court in a miscellaneous application E472/2023.
The DCI officers sought to detain him for three days to conduct the Investigation and charge him.
According to the documents presented before the court, Mr. Ouko received information on November 24, 2023, that a certain Safaricom number, which was purported to be his, had been defrauding public members with the pretext that he could influence public employment.
By using Justice Oukos’s name, he solicited and received money from the unsuspecting victims.
After receiving the information, the judge reported to the police, recorded a statement, and the Investigation commenced.
Further, the court papers read that the DCI investigators also received intelligence from the local police and residents of the Awendo area that there were complaints from the members of the public against the respondent.
The officers discovered that five people from various parts of the country had fallen into such fraud and needed to trace, interview, and record their statements.
The affidavit of the DCI indicated that the suspect has residences in the counties of Nairobi, Kakamega, and Migori, from where he is suspected of operating his fraudulent activities.
The police sought orders from the court to enable them to conduct a search in the said residences to recover any evidence that might be relevant to the ongoing Investigations.
Among the documents filed in court as evidence are letters purported to be a cross-section of organizations offering employment to the people whom Mr. Omollo supposedly used the name of the judge of the supreme court will secure.
They followed the application; the court granted an order for the suspect to be detained in the custody of DCI for three more days to allow the conclusion of the Investigation and transport the respondent to Kisumu, where most of the alleged crimes occurred.
The court directed the suspect to be arraigned in Kisumu law courts on December 19, 2023, where he will be charged.
