Caretaker’s Betrayal who Stole Sh 630,000 From Landlord

A house caretaker who oversees more than 1000 rental houses in various city estates within Nairobi county has been charged with stealing Sh 663,000.
Harrison Mungai Maina jointly with others who were not before the court committed the offence on diverse dates between January 28, 2017 and June 14, 2020, within Nairobi county.
Maina who was the manager of the properties owned by Kaags Investment Limited denied the charges before the Milimani chief magistrate Susan Shitubi.
The prosecution told the court that the accused stole the money that he received from other caretakers under him in the monthly collection of house rent.
The court heard that Kaags Investment Limited owns properties in Eastleigh, Mlango Kubwa, Ngara, Kariobangi South, Thika Road, and Mombasa Road within Nairobi county.
Maina was entrusted with the responsibility of supervising other caretakers who were managing the properties developed by the company.
In the case presented before the court, the accused received the money and failed to remit the same to the company.
Through his lawyer, Maina pleaded to be released on reasonable terms citing that he is out on bond in another similar matter where the complainant in both matters is one,
“Your honor there is another criminal matter pending before court similar to this one where the complainant in the two matter is the same,” he pleaded.
The court further heard that in the previous matter, the accused was charged with stealing Sh 500,000 on diverse dates between January 2017 and June 2020.
The said money was the property of Kaags Investment Limited.
He was released on bond of Sh 100,000 with a surety of the same or alternative cash bail of Sh 60,000.
The matter will be mentioned on May 7, 2023, for pre-trial and directions.
