Co-op Bank Employee Faces Theft Charges Over Sh2.4 Million

A Co-operative Bank employee has been charged at a Milimani law court with stealing Sh 2.4 million.

Joseph Musembi Mutuku was charged that on diverse dates between May 1, 2022, and December 30, 2023, at Co-operative Bank Maasai Mall Branch in Ongata Rongai within Kajiado county stole the said money.

The prosecution told the court that the accused stole Sh 2, 464,870 property of Co-operative Bank Limited which came to his possession by virtue of his employment.

The court heard that during the commitment of the alleged offence Mutuku was employed as a teller in the said bank.

He appeared before the Milimani senior principal magistrate Gilbert Shikwe and denied the charges.

Through his lawyer, he pleaded with the court for lenient bond terms citing that he lost his employment and is struggling to survive with his young family,

“I pray for lenient bond terms since I am not employed currently despite being the sole bread winner to my young family,” he pleaded.

He also added that his place of abode is known and assured to adhere to the rules to be set by the court.

He was released on bond of Sh 500,000 with a surety of the same amount or alternative cash bail of Sh 300,000 with two contact persons.

The matter will be mentioned on July 25, 2024, for mention and further directions.
