Woman Charged in Nairobi Court Over KSh 4M Fake U.S. Scholarship Scam
Felicity Gakii appeared before the Milimani Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai and denied four counts of obtaining money by pretence, conspiracy to defraud, acquisition and use of proceeds of crime.
A woman has been charged in a Nairobi court with obtaining over Ksh 4 million from a parent by promising to secure a scholarship for her daughter to the United States of America.
Felicity Gakii appeared before the Milimani Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai and denied four counts of obtaining money by pretence, conspiracy to defraud, acquisition and use of proceeds of crime.
The prosecution told the court that, on various dates between July 2025 and February 2026, in Nairobi County, Kenya, the accused, jointly with others not before the court, obtained Ksh 4,037,500 from Susan Nkatha Karima.
The court heard that the accused promised to secure a scholarship position for Nkatha’s daughter to the USA, which was a false promise.
In the second count, she was charged with conspiring to defraud the complainant while knowing it was a lie.
Further, she was charged with the acquisition and use of proceeds of crime contrary to the law.
Gakii received the said money through her Safaricom line and through a bank account held at the NCBA Bank, being a benefit in respect of a case of obtaining money by pretence.
She denied the charges and prayed to be released on lenient bond and cash bail terms.
The prosecution did not oppose her release on reasonable terms.
The Magistrate granted her a bond of Ksh 600,000 with a surety of the same amount and scheduled the matter for mention on September 9, 2026, for pre-trial.
