Faith vs. Science: Woman “Healed” at Prophet Owuor’s Crusade Demands Ministry of Health Clarify HIV Testing Kits

"Finally, I went to where I was diagnosed and committed to the ARTs, the medical personnel expressed concern regarding the inconsistency between the prior confirmed diagnosis and the subsequent negative outcome," Awino told journalists.

A woman who was allegedly healed through Prophet Owuor’s miraculous healing has written a demand letter to the Ministry of Health seeking the authenticity of HIV testing kits after the claims by KEMRI that she was not infected with the virus from the onset, despite being under Anti-Retroviral Therapy.
Through her lawyers, led by Danstan Omari, Millicent Awino wrote a demand to the Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, the Director General of KEMRI, the Attorney General, and the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) seeking to know how she was put under ART without being infected as they claim she was not positive from the onset.
Awino claims that she took herself to Ulungu Dispensary, a government facility, on September 14, 2023, after experiencing prolonged complications consistent with HIV, and after the tests by the doctor, she was diagnosed with HIV.
Two weeks later, Awino went to Usigu Health Facility, where she was tested again and confirmed to have the virus. She was initiated on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) after the results and was registered and issued a Yellow Card bearing his personal details for the purpose of picking up the drugs monthly at the facility.
One year and two months under Antiretroviral therapy, Awino, through the television, followed a religious healing crusade held in Menengai, Nakuru, which was broadcast live on K24 television.
Following the call to action of HIV positive patients by Prophet David Owuor, whilst at her home, she placed her HIV clinic card directly on the screen of the television, and she experienced a sensation she associated with healing.
She asserted that the said prophet directed those whose faith convinced them of healing to go and be retested.
After several tests to confirm the status, she received negative results. “Finally, I went to where I was diagnosed and committed to the ARTs, the medical personnel expressed concern regarding the inconsistency between the prior confirmed diagnosis and the subsequent negative outcome,” Awino told journalists.
She explained that through her faith, she was healed. Subsequently, she went to testify in her church of the miracle that she had received despite a scientific confirmation that she was HIV positive.
Following the unusual and conflicting clinical scientific findings, the matter escalated to national attention, and the case was taken to the county and national health authorities.
Records within the Taifa Care System were examined, and it was confirmed that she had been duly enrolled, monitored, and treated as an HIV positive patient within the national program.
Further testing was conducted under NASCOP, and on January 15, 2026, Awino was subjected to multiple tests at KEMRI Kisumu, including rapid diagnostic testing, quantitative and qualitative DNA PCR, and ELISA testing. The results were not released.
A related issue arises from Peter Oyan, who was tested on May 3, 2012, and enrolled on ART and remained on treatment until May 17, 2014. Accordingly, assertions denying his HIV status are said to be false and malicious.
The lawyers want the Ministry of Health to clarify whether their client and the general public ought to rely on their scientific system of HIV testing, or if the said have been compromised vis-à-vis public interest.
