Through his lawyer, he requested to be released with lenient bond terms, saying he has been jobless since last year after the bank terminated his employment.

An Equity Bank ex-employee has been charged at a Nairobi court with stealing Ksh 1.7 million from the account of the said bank.

Francis Njuguna Kamau, jointly with others who were not before the court, was charged that on diverse dates between July 26 and August 24, 2024, at Equity bank Makongeni Thika Branch, being an employee of the said bank, stole Ksh 1,752,107, the property of Equity Bank Limited.

In the second count, jointly with others who were not in court, he was charged with stealing Ksh 443,691 from a different account held at Equity Bank.

He appeared before the Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhumbi and denied the charges.

Through his lawyer, he requested to be released with lenient bond terms, saying he has been jobless since last year after the bank terminated his employment.

“Your honour, I pray to this court to grant the accused person lenient bond terms since he is now struggling for survival,” the lawyer prayed.

The lawyer also told the court that the accused is a father of two and the sole breadwinner.

He was released on a bond of Ksh 400,000 with a surety of a similar amount, with alternative cash bail of Ksh 250,000 with three contact persons.

The matter will be mentioned on July 28, 2025.
