Four Years Later: Retired Officer Faces Grievous Harm Charge
He denied the charges and prayed to be set free on lenient bond and bail terms citing he is not a flight risk.
A retired police officer has been charged in a Nairobi court with attacking and causing grievous harm to a man.
The incident, which took place in Githurai 44, In Roysambu within Nairobi county four years ago left the residents questioning the actions of the former law enforcement.
Sergeant John Mitonga, who retired last year appeared before the Milimani principal magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo and denied the charges leveled against him by the prosecution.
The court heard that on May 2, 2021, at Githurai 44 area within Nairobi County unlawfully did grievous harm to Patrick Nduma.
He denied the charges and prayed to be set free on lenient bond and bail terms citing he is not a flight risk.
Through his defence lawyer, he urged the court also to consider her health condition saying he suffers health complications.
The lawyer added that there are negotiations in progress between the two families to settle the matter out of court.
He was released on bond of Ksh 1 million with a surety of the same amount or alternative cash bail of Ksh 500,000 with one contact person.
The matter will be mentioned on May 7, 2025, for pre-trial and directions.
