Six Detained Over Fake SGR Ticket Scam on TikTok and Facebook
"Following the oral allegations by the second respondent that he is under 18 years, we adjourn the matter until Thursday to give the Inspector Kinyua time to take him to the hospital for the age assessment," the Magistrate stated.
The Kibera Magistrate has ordered six suspects alleged to operate a fake Madaraka Express media page on TikTok and Facebook to be detained in custody until Thursday, July 16, to confirm the age of one suspect.
While directing the six to be detained, the Kibera Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo directed the officer investigating the matter, Chief Inspector Nickson Kinyua, to hold them at Muthaiga police station until Thursday to confirm the age of the second respondent,
“Following the oral allegations by the second respondent that he is under 18 years, we adjourn the matter until Thursday to give the Inspector Kinyua time to take him to the hospital for the age assessment,” the Magistrate stated.
The respondent who was not represented will benefit from the state if confirmed to be under age, since he will be given a counsel to represent him on a pro bono basis.
The Magistrate ordered them to remain at Muthaiga Police Station until Thursday for further directions.
The respondents, Evarest Obwoya Omaywa, Kelvin Kibet Alias Festus Kibet, John Omayo Obwocha Alias Collins, Georgee Kibet, Brian Cheruiyot, and Brian Onwonga, are alleged to operate the said social media accounts, through which they feigned to sell SGR Tickets online and reallocate seats with SGR to unsuspecting members of the public, thereby defrauding them upon making payments as directed on the fake social media pages.
The Respondents are the suspects behind the illicit scheme and were arrested by DCI Officers from DCI Headquarters in Nakuru County, brought to Nairobi, and thereafter booked into custody at Muthaiga Police Station at 0219Hrs. on the 13/07/2026 vide OB No. 04/13/7/2026.
The complainant in this matter is the Kenya Railways Corporation.
According to court documents, Kinyua intends to seek a 21-day custodial order at Muthaiga Police Station to conclude investigations and charge the suspects with the alleged offences.
“….the matter involves recovery and analysis of deleted data, internet browsing records, account recovery information, cloud-based records, login histories, IP addresses, communication logs, and other digital artefacts…” read the document in part.
The matter will proceed on Thursday this week.
