Trio Charged in SIM Card Fraud Targeting Detained Police OCS

They are accused of dishonestly replacing Talaam's SIM card number and soliciting money from the public for their own gain.

Three men who were allegedly involved in replacing the SIM card of the detained former Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam to deceive have been charged at Milimani court.

Amos Nzomo Kimanzi, James Mutemi Munyithya, and Dennis Masavi Musyimi were charged before Milimani senior principal magistrate Dolphina Alego with conspiring to commit a felony, computer fraud, unlawful use of an identity card belonging to another person, obtaining false registration, and deceiving.

However, Musyimi admitted to computer fraud offenses and obtained registration by pretence.

The trio was charged that on diverse dates between June 16 and 19 this year, jointly with another, before the court Brian Kiptoo, in conjunction with others at large, conspired to commit a felony, namely computer fraud.

They are accused of dishonestly replacing Talaam’s SIM card number and soliciting money from the public for their own gain.

Among those who received a money donation plea from the three accused persons is lawyer Cliff Ombeta, who is defending Talaam in the murder case where the top police officer is charged with murdering a teacher and a blogger, Albert Ojwang.

Talaam is charged alongside five others for the brutal and heinous killing of the blogger at the Central Police Station cell on the night of June 7, 2025.

The six have denied the charge of murder, and they are being held at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

The prosecution told the court that Kimanzi, Munyithya, and Musyimi fraudulently replaced Talaam’s SIM card while he was in custody and began soliciting money.

From Ombeta, the fraudsters solicited Ksh 80,000.

Munyithya is accused of using Kimanzi’s ID number to register a SIM card, which they activated on a phone handset and used to feed the Talaam’s number.

Musyimi is also accused of procuring another person’s ID to register and replace Talaam’s phone number.

In a surprise turn of events, Musyimi admitted the SIM swap offences and will be returned before the same court on August 20 for facts and sentencing.

Prosecuting counsel Sonia Njoki urged the court to remand all three accused until tomorrow, when further directions will be volunteered.

She did not oppose their bail application but requested that the court consider the charges they faced.

Kimanzi and Munyithya were released on a bond of Ksh 500,000 with two sureties of the same amount, with an alternative cash bail of Ksh 200,000 with one contact person.
