Deaf Man’s Plea Over Alleged Burglary at MP Ronald Karauri’s House Deferred for Sign Interpreter

"Since the accused person is deaf, the court needs a sign language interpreter for the accused person to understand the reason why he was brought to court," the Magistrate stated.

A Nairobi Magistrate has deferred the plea-taking of a man who is accused of burglary and stealing in a residential house belonging to the Kasarani Member of Parliament, Captain Ronald Karauri, due to a communication barrier.
While deferring the plea, the Milmani Principal Magistrate, Paul Mutai, stated that communication is the key for the accused person to understand the charge clearly before pleading.
“Since the accused person is deaf, the court needs a sign language interpreter for the accused person to understand the reason why he was brought to court,” the Magistrate stated.
According to the court documents, Jeremy Kamau, who is deaf, is accused of burglary and stealing one laptop, make MacBook valued at Ksh 100,000, two cans of energy drinks valued at Ksh 500, the property of the said MP.
The said offence took place on the night of January 18, 2026, at around 0100 hours in Westlands Subcounty within Nairobi County.
He faced an alternative charge of handling stolen property contrary to Section 322 of the Penal Code.
The plea-taking was deferred to Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
