Woman charged with conning job seeker Ksh 200,000 over fake Denmark job

A woman who is alleged to have conned a job seeker of Ksh 200,000 in the guise of assisting him to secure employment in Denmark has been charged with the offence of obtaining money by pretence.

Leah Wanjiku Macharia appeared before the Milimani Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai and denied the charges levelled against her by the prosecution.

She denied that, on September 30, 2025, at Absa Towers along Loita Street in Nairobi County, she obtained Ksh 200,000 from Alexander Kyalo Peter with intent to defraud by pretending to be in a position to assist him in getting employment in Denmark, which was false.

The defence lawyer pleaded with the court to defer the plea-taking of the accused, citing that negotiations with the complainant were ongoing and he wanted a bit of time to conclude.

“Your Honour, I plead with this court to defer the plea-taking of the accused to next week since negotiations with the complainant are ongoing,” the lawyer submitted.

The Magistrate declined the application presented by the defence, saying that plea-taking does not close the door to negotiations and the parties are at liberty to negotiate.

She denied the charges and prayed for leniency in terms of cash bail and bond terms.

The court granted her a bond of Ksh 100,000 and alternative cash bail of Ksh 30,000.

The matter will be mentioned on September 17, 2026, for pre-trial and confirmation of ongoing negotiations.
