Woman Sentenced to Six Years for Kidnapping Minor and Attempted Extortion

"I have considered the mitigation by the accused person having no previous criminal record and being a first-time offender," the Magistrate said.

A magistrate court in Nairobi has sentenced a woman to serve six years in prison for the offence of abducting a minor with intent to confine and attempted extortion.

While delivering the sentence, Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina considered the probation report submitted by the officer investigating the matter and that of the prosecution that she is a first-time offender,

“I have considered the mitigation by the accused person having no previous criminal record and being a first-time offender,” the Magistrate said.

The court also considered the pre-bail report from the officer investigating the matter, which suggested that the accused person required a custodial sentence.

The Magistrate further indicated that the offence committed is grave and the accused needs to learn a lesson.

Pauline Kendi was convicted of the offences of kidnapping and attempted extortion by demanding money and threats.

She was charged that on September 22, 2025, at Githogoro Area in Westlands Sub-county within Nairobi county, she wrongfully confined and kidnapped a minor aged six years.

In the second count, she was charged with attempted extortion by demanding money with menaces contrary to the law.

On September 23, 2025, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, with the intent to extort, Kendi demanded a sum of Ksh 300,000 from Rose Kawera by threatening to continue holding her daughter, aged six years, and only release her upon payment of the requested sum.

In delivering the sentence, the Magistrate ordered the accused to serve six years in the first count and two years in the second count, and both sentences to run concurrently.
