Fate of Seven Accused in MP George Muchai’s Killing to be Known Next Month

"I want to take another date since the judgment is not ready. The case is one of the longest matters I have ever handled, and I would need more time to complete the judgment," the Magistrate said.

The seven accused persons in the murder of former Kabete Member of Parliament George Muchai will know their fate on January 30, 2026, the court directed.

While adjourning the matter, Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina indicated that the judgment was not ready, given that the matter had been pending for more than 10 years and the documents were bulky.

“I want to take another date since the judgment is not ready. The case is one of the longest matters I have ever handled, and I would need more time to complete the judgment,” the Magistrate said.

The first accused, Eric Muyiera Isabwa, pleaded for the court’s indulgence to allow him to seek treatment. He informed the court that he had been complaining to the wardens, but they failed to take him to the hospital.

“Your honour, I have been sick for a while now, eating has become a problem, kindly, your honour, help me,” he pleaded with the court.

He also informed the court that one of their colleagues in remand died recently, and no one knows the cause of his death.

The Magistrate ordered the facility to escort Isabwa to the hospital for treatment.

Three of the seven accused notified the Magistrate that they were acquitted of the murder charge in the High Court, which was running concurrently with the criminal matter.

While acquitting Jane Wanjiru Kamau alias Shiro, Margaret Njeri Wachiuri and Simon Wambugu Gichamba, Justice Kanyi Kimondo stated that the prosecution did not present sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the three were involved in the murder of the late MP.

In the ruling delivered on September 23, 2025, the judge indicated that “the evidence against the three was insufficient for the court to direct them to be placed on defence.”

Their co-accused Eric Mungera Isabwa, alias Chairman, Raphael Kimani Gachii, alias Kim Butcher, Mustafa Kimani Anyoni, alias Musto and Stephen Astiva Lipopo, alias Chokore, were put on their defence.

The seven accused persons were charged with the offence of robbery with violence, where they allegedly hijacked and robbed two sisters, Gladys Waithira and Irene Muthoni, put them in the trunk of their vehicle and became eyewitnesses to the shooting, which took Muchai’s life, jointly with his driver and two bodyguards.

The court will deliver the judgment on January 30, 2026.
